I have a confession to make: I haven't played a game in years. However, why the fuck am I making one?
Because it fills me with determination.
It's no surprise I'm the kind of gay animal on the 'puter that likes to create. And to no surprise, my artistic path has been anything but smooth. And these last couple months, I learned one thing: determination is the blind faith on what could or not be.
The world makes you think you're useless because you're not the best, better or you're hampered by chains imposed by the cruelty of existence. It takes both determination and a good chunk of destructive, toxic and soul-crushing experiences to realise that blind faith on the unknown is the subconscious engine to survival. Or, you know it, determination.
See a theme here? Yes. That game. You know which one. It was the game I've always wanted to make but thought: if someone else did it, why should I do the same?
You won't. You're not the same.
Art is cathartic. Videogames are, like it or not, an medium of artistic expression. And also, a pretty good therapy to exercise all muscles of digital creative media.
The only time you aren't hampered by corporate egos, mental health struggles, the cruelty of being an early-zoomer/late-millenial in a society devoid of resources to even get a fucking job regardless of education level... is shouting it out loud without having to resort to venting to the point of alienation.
And, to you, that might not have the means or skill to do this, think about this: we are living in a world where inequality and horror are the new gods. We only have each other. Our collective determination to get us out of our shitshow.
The only way to survive a world radioactive to mental wellbeing, wastelands devoid of a sense of purpose or the semblance of stability; is having blind faith that, together, we can work it out.
Cheesy as fuck, eh? merp
Instead of toxic venting, of which I am guilty as charged, transform it into spite and determination to overcome the hand you were dealt with.
A game is a medium which, through digital, interactive art, you can express your story, keep you busy, determined, and maybe empathise with someone in your same situation. You can find your medium too, in due time and, with the thing I've said a billion times by now.
Just make that sense of blind faith on the unknown fill you with determination.
Now, for real:
Say, Frame, what the hell are you doing?
I got told in my 2nd year of college (out of 8): "you're sophisticated but you don't dominate the idea you work yourself".
This is gonna be pure, raw, uncesored and unconstrained Framebuffer at its best. It's not gaming for the masses, it's a personal manifesto on these times. Gonna publish it someday because, who knows, maybe it's also a good game.
_No, but seriously Frame, what are you doing?
Yes.
Thanks.
